Mary Baker Eddy discovered the scientific principles of healing in 1866. In doing so, she brought the Comforter that Jesus had promised and named it Christian Science.

In John 14:16, Jesus promised his followers “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of Truth…” Christian Scientists around the world believe that Mary Baker Eddy brought this Comforter when she discovered the principles of Divine Science and founded the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, better known as the Christian Science church.

Jesus of Nazareth Was Rejected When He Claimed to be the Messiah

With few exceptions, his contemporaries failed to discern the fact that Jesus was the Messiah that had been foretold in Isaiah. They fully accepted and anticipated the coming of such a Messiah, but rejected the individual who was fulfilling the prophecy before their very eyes.

Jesus said to them in unmistakable terms, “This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears”. But instead of hearing him with any spiritual discernment, they focused on the human, corporeal man from Nazareth, the son of Joseph, and they missed the impelling Divine spirit of the Christ within the man.

Mary Baker Eddy Was Rejected When She Claimed to Discover the Comforter

On page 55 of her Christian Science textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy says, “Perhaps the early Christian era did Jesus no more injustice than the later centuries have bestowed upon the healing Christ and spiritual idea of being.”

In addition to the Master’s prophecy of the coming Comforter, Eddy identifies portions of the book of Revelation, especially the twelfth chapter, as being suggestive of her own century. She saw the woman clothed with the Sun as symbolic of generic man, the spiritual idea of God, and the travail of birth as man’s struggle to deliver the sweet promise of spiritual laws.

Eddy refutes any notion that the Revelator was prophesying her human person, or the specific personality of any person. St. John’s vision depicts spiritual truths, not human forms. She further says that the human appearance of these Truths will prevail through a heightened state of consciousness that bears witness to the Revelator.

A thorough reading of Christian Science materials along with the book of Revelation will disclose that St. John did not prophesy the life history of Mary Baker Eddy as a human being, but that her lifework demonstrably fulfills John’s prophecy.

History is Filled With Other Scientific Principles Brought Forth Much Later

Leonardo da Vinci proposed the feasibility of a manually operated flying machine and the principle he described preceded the first airplane by four hundred years. The principle of aerodynamics existed long before the Wright brothers brought it to finite manifestation in 1903, and da Vinci’s proposal was prophetic in nature even thought he did not foresee two men named Orville and Wilbur Wright.

There are many other examples throughout history of scientific principles expressed long before they came to material fruition. Mary Baker Eddy believed that her discovery of spiritual science was one of those instances and that she indeed was the messenger who brought a divine idea to humankind.

The teachings of Christian Science have been taught for only a century and a half. The teachings of Jesus of Nazareth were not generally accepted for more than two centuries after his death. Perhaps time will tell whether Mary Baker Eddy was indeed the pioneer of New Thought who brought the basic principles of spiritual healing to the world.
